Balloon Angioplasty
Balloon angioplasty is a procedure used to widen or open narrowed arteries. An interventional cardiologist inserts a catheter with a deflated balloon at its tip into blocked artery. This catheter is inserted into the body through an artery in either the groin or arm. Once the balloon is brought to the narrowing, it is inflated, pushing the plaque against the artery wall and opening the blood vessel to enable blood to flow more easily. Following inflation, the balloon is deflated and the catheter and balloon are removed.
