Xenical
Name: Trade name Generic Name
Xenical (Rx) Orlistat
Alli (OTC)
Purpose: To help you successfully lose weight and maintain your weight loss
Action: Blocks enzymes in the intestines so that about 30 % of the fat you have eaten is not absorbed or digested.
Dose: Take one 120 mg capsule with liquid 3 x per day. One capsule should be taken with each of your 3 main meals which contain fat. Xenical can be taken with a meal or up to 1 hour after the meal.
You should not take Xenical if any of the following apply:
*Problems absorbing food (chronic malabsorption)
*Gallbladder problems
*Pregnant or are breastfeeding a child
*Have ever had an allergic reaction to orlistat or any of the inactive ingredients in XENICAL
Possible side effects:
You may have some changes in your bowel habits such as oily spotting, gas with discharge, urgent need to go to the bathroom, oily or fatty stools, an oily discharge, increased number of bowel movements and/or an inability to control bowel movements. Due to the presence of undigested fat, the oil seen in a bowel movement may be clear or have a brown or orange color. These side effects are often temporary and generally occur early in treatment, particularly after meals containing higher amounts of fat than are recommended. Side effects may lessen or disappear as you keep the fat in your diet low (less than 30%).
Special instructions:
-Each time you take Xenical, your meal should contain no more than 30% of calories from fat.
-You should take a multivitamin every day at bedtime or at least 2 hours before or after taking Xenical.
-It is important for you to have 3 regularly scheduled meals a day—breakfast, lunch, and dinner. Your schedule should include 3 meals plus 1 or 2 nonfat or reduced-fat snacks. The time between eating a meal or snack should be no more than 4 hours to prevent hunger and overeating. The more regular your meal schedule, the better. A different schedule on the weekends is OK, but you should still have 3 meals daily.
