Use                  Treat and prevent angina attacks, reduce workload on the heart.

 

Action             Nitrates relax the blood vessels, which reduces the oxygen demand of the heart and improves blood flow to the heart muscle.

 

 

Side Effects    Every drug is capable of producing side effects.  Most patients experience no, or minor, side effects.  Possible side effects:

  • Common: Headache, which is usually temporary

Rare: Lightheadedness, constipation, nausea.

 

 

Guidelines for Taking This Medication

  • May be taken without regard to food
  • If a dose is missed, take it as soon as you remember; do not take it if it is almost time for the next dose
  • To avoid lightheadedness, rise from a sitting or lying position slowly
  • Headache is usually temporary and subsides once you adjust to the medication; notify your doctor of nurse if you have a persistent headache
  • Notify your provider if you are on any medications for heart rhythm as this medication may interact.
  • Avoid over the counter cough, cold, and allergy medication except upon professional recommendation.
  • Do not take with more than 20mg of Zocor (Simvastatin) a commonly prescribed cholesterol lowering medication.

 

Lab Tests

Kidney function tests not routinely done, although dose adjustment may be made if kidney impairment is noted.
