Use: 

Indicated to reduce the risk of hospitalization for atrial fibrillation in patients in sinus rhythm with a history of paroxysmal or persistent atrial fibrillation

Action:

Reduces the occurrence of atrial fibrillation and atrial flutter

Possible Side Effects:

    Common Side Effects:

  • Gastrointestinal disorders, which may include diarrhea, nausea, vomiting, stomach pain, heart burn
  • Rash or itching
  • Weakness
  • Modest increase in creatinine level

     More serious side effects:

  • New or worsening congestive heart failure, which may include shortness of breath, difficulty sleeping at night due to breathing, swelling
  • Slow heart rate
  • Changes in electrocardiogram

Guidelines for Taking This Medication:

  • Take twice daily with food
  • Do not stop this medication, unless directed by your doctor or nurse
  • Dosage of other medications may need to be adjusted when taking dronedarone
  • Notify your doctor or nurse promptly if you experience shortness of breath, cough, dizziness or fainting
  • Contact your doctor or nurse before taking any new prescription or any over-the-counter medications
  • Keep regular appointments with our doctor; this medication needs to be monitored closely- including an EKG every 3 months and periodic bloodwork

Contraindication:

  • NYHA Class IV heart failure and patients with NYHA Class II-III heart failure with recent decompensation requiring a hospitalization
  • Second or third degree AV heart block
  • Sick sinus syndrome
  • Women of childbearing potential
  • Permanent atrial fibrillation (patients in whom normal sinus rhythm will not or cannot be restored)

  • renal impairment, liver impairment

Follow-up Tests:

  • Blood test to monitor electrolytes, renal and liver function
