Use                  Treat heart failure

 

Action             Beta blockers affect the response of some nerve impulses to the heart and other areas of the body, which results in a decreased need for blood and oxygen by the heart and a reduced workload on the heart.  Beta blockers in heart failure have resulted in improvement in heart function.

 

Possible Side Effects

 

Every drug is capable of producing side effects.  Most patients experience no, or minor, side effects.  Possible side effects:

·        Common: Fatigue, which usually resolves after 4 to 6 weeks of therapy

·        Rare: Gastrointestinal upset, lightheadedness, cold extremities, numbness of hands, shortness of breath, wheezing

·        Very rare: Sexual dysfunction

 

Guidelines for Taking This Medication

 

·        Take with food

·        Take your medication at the same time each day

·        If a dose is missed, take it as soon as you remember; do not take the medication if it is almost time for the next dose, unless advised by your doctor or nurse

·        Do not stop this medication unless directed by your doctor or nurse; harmful effects may occur if you stop it suddenly

·        Notify your doctor or nurse if you experience difficulty breathing, cough, swelling of the extremities, slow heart beat, confusion or depression

·        To avoid lightheadedness, rise from a sitting or lying position slowly

·        Avoid over-the-counter cough, cold, allergy, pain medications with the exception of Tylenol, and diet medications, except upon professional recommendation

·        Check your blood pressure regularly at home
