Action             Aldosterone blockers work by blocking the effect of a hormone called aldosterone, which can worsen heart failure.  These medications have been shown to improve survival in patients with heart failure.  Aldosterone blockers are also used to treat high blood pressure.  These medications cause the body to conserve potassium.  They can have a mild diuretic effect.

 

Possible Side Effects

 

Every drug is capable of producing side effects.  Most patients experience no, or minor, side effects.  Possible side effects:

·         Increase in potassium levels

 

·         Breast enlargement in males*

 

·         Excessive body hair growth*

 

·         Sexual dysfunction in males*

 

* More prevalent with Aldactone

 

 

Guidelines for Taking This Medication

 

·         May be taken without regard to food

 

·         Notify your doctor or nurse if you develop muscle weakness, muscle cramps or irregular heart beats

 

·         Do not take a potassium supplement unless prescribed by the doctor

 

·         Avoid salt substitutes containing potassium

 

·         Be aware of foods that are high in potassium, such as avocados, bananas, dried fruits, melons, brussel sprouts, cauliflower, potatoes, beans and nuts

 

·         Avoid over-the-counter cough, cold, allergy and diet medications except upon professional recommendation

 

 

Follow-up Tests

 

·         Blood test to monitor electrolytes and kidney function
