Using the Food Pyramid (2000 Guidelines)
The food pyramid helps you choose the right kinds of foods. And it helps you eat the right amount of each food you choose. The larger the pyramid section, the more servings of those foods you should eat.
Fats, Oils, and Sweets
Choose olive, canola, safflower, or sunflower oil or liquid margarine.
Limit added sugar and foods high in sugar.
Milk, Yogurt, and Cheese
Choose fat-free or low-fat milk or low-fat buttermilk.
Try nonfat yogurt and fat-free or low-fat cheese and cottage cheese.
Meat, Poultry, Fish, Beans, Eggs, and Nuts
Choose fish, dried beans, tofu, and chicken or turkey breast most often.
Look for red meat with little or no visible fat.
Vegetables
Choose nutrient-dense vegetables such as dark leafy greens, carrots, broccoli, and squash.
Fruit
Include fruit at meals, or eat fruit for snacks.
Eat fresh fruits most often.
Bread, Cereal, Rice, and Pasta
Choose oatmeal and whole-grain bread, pasta, and dried cereal.
Try brown rice, corn tortillas, couscous, millet, or kasha.
