What’s the Portfolio Diet?

It is a combination of several dietary recommendations that are known to lower cholesterol and risk of heart disease.   A recent study found that adding 4 simple foods to a low saturated fat and cholesterol diet could reduce LDL levels by an average of 35% in one month.

Consider trying the Portfolio Diet yourself to lower your cholesterol and risk of heart disease.  Here are the 4 simple things you can add to your low saturated fat diet.  The amount consumed daily based on an 1800 calorie diet is listed in parentheses.

1.) Soy Protein – This unique protein is found in soy milk, soy cheese, soy nuts, soy protein bars, and soy protein shakes.  (35 grams / day)

2.) Psyllium Fiber – Supplement your diet with an effective soluble fiber source, psyllium, found in Metamucil®, up to two times a day.  Other soluble fiber sources include oatmeal, barley, beans, pears, apples, and eggplant.  (18 grams soluble fiber / day)

3.) Plant Sterol and Stanol Esters – These naturally occurring substances are found in certain margarines such as Benecol® and Take Control® and Minute Maid Heart Wise® orange juice, or in a pill form, such as Cholest-Off® and Cholesterol Success®. (2 grams plant sterols / day)

4.) Almonds – A handful of these nuts have a healthy fat that is good for the heart. (approximately 20 whole raw almonds / day)
