The Ankle-Brachial Index

The ankle-brachial index(ABI) is a simple, non-invasive reliable test used to identify Peripheral Artery Disease(PAD).

The test is performed be an experienced technician. An ultrasound probe is used to register pulses in the arms and ankles. A blood pressure cuff is applied to arms and ankles to measure blood pressure.

The ankle-brachial index is calculated by taking the ankle systolic pressure number divided by the arm systolic pressure.

An abnormal ABI indicates blockage in a leg artery.

What is Peripheral Artery Disease(PAD)?

Peripheral artery disease is also known as atherosclerosis or poor leg circulation. This condition is a narrowing or blockage of the arteries that supply blood to the arms and legs.

Consider having the ankle-brachial test if you...

  • Have high blood pressure
  • Have a family history of heart disease
  • Have pain in your legs when walking that ceases at rest
