Midwest Heart Specialists achieves a permanent place in history at the Smithsonian Institution's National Museum of American History.

December 1998
Midwest Heart Specialists was recently nominated for the prestigious Computerworld Smithsonian Award in the Medicine category for pioneering wireless computing in the clinical setting. The 32-physician cardiology practice has offices in Downers Grove, Elmhurst, Naperville and Carol Stream.

At Midwest Heart Specialists hand-held computers are becoming as common as stethoscopes among the tools physicians view as essential.

The group is at the leading edge of the latest high-tech trend in collecting and recording patients' medical information. Traditional paper-based patient charts are being replaced with computerized electronic versions, giving physicians access to patients' medical information with the press of a button. By using electronic medical records (EMRs), they can instantly retrieve patients' family history, medical history, laboratory results, imaging test reports and a complete log of drug and dietary therapies. All records are privacy protected with secured-access systems.

Emergency Support
As the information contained in electronic medical records continues to be incorporated into the group's database, patient-sensitive issues can be handled more effectively. The benefits of the new system were clear to one Midwest Heart Specialists' patient who had a heart attack during an out-of-state business trip. As he was being airlifted to a hospital, Midwest Heart Specialists' staff and physician utilized the EMR to relay pertinent medical information promptly to the cardiologist on-site. The EMR made the process of communication more efficient resulting in more timely and appropriate care.

Midwest Heart Specialists' use of the hand-held computers has been reported in several publications including: Health Data Management, Health Measures, and Health Management Technology. The group has also recently been recognized as one of the top Windows NT Innovators for 1999 for its innovative and progressive approach using the Windows NT operating system.

Collecting patient data at the point of care is just one of the ways in which Midwest Heart Specialists is delivering quality cardiac care.
